Former Mayor P. Pete Chalos dies at 78

By Deb McKee
The Tribune-Star

No matter how many politicians he has known, how many business leaders he has influenced or how many books he has written, the true measure of a man may best be expressed in the way he is remembered by his family and friends.

Terre Haute lost a lifelong champion Sunday evening when former Mayor P. Pete Chalos died, a few weeks shy of his 79th birthday.

“I just can’t say how great of a dad he was,” said Jim Chalos, current Terre Haute city councilman. Choked with emotion Sunday, a little more than an hour after his father died, Jim said it means a lot when a man puts his family first, “even when he has an important job like that. I remember calling him up as a teenager when I’d have a ‘crisis’ that really might be nothing, but it didn’t matter. He’d clear his schedule to be able to sit and have dinner and talk to me.

“He can only get the highest praise here,” Jim said. “He’s the reason we are what we are today.” ...

Hello, I just joined and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Robin, I am 26 and live in Sullivan IN. I have lived in Terre Haute twice before and make frequent trips there to shop and what not. I have a daughter who is almost 2, I am a Christian, and I am interested in politics. There probably is a lot more to me, but I am really sleepy so I don't remember anything else.

Hey dudes.

My husband just got his acceptance letter to ISU for grad school. Which means we've got about three weeks to come from Columbus Ohio to Indiana. I'm really nervous! How is the job market in Terra Haute right now? How are winters? How's traffic?

This is happening so fast! I hope Terra Haute is fun!

Creative Writing Groups? [Dec. 1st, 2005|09:24 am]

[music |"Joseph's Lullaby" ~Mercy Me]

Hey all,

I was curoius whether or not there were any creative writing clubs or groups anyone knew about that met in Terre Haute or the surrounding area. Just a group to get together, brainstorm, share and critique each other's writing...

Let me know! I'm interested in either joining or setting up such a group. :)

[music |The Tourist by: Radiohead]

"Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and stars; you have a right to be here, and whether or not it is clear to you; no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should." - Max Ehrmann (Terre Haute native)

* A Fearsome Riddle by Max Ehrmann is a murder mystery set in the downtown structure currently under demolition which was once a grand hotel, The Terre Haute House.
